Kayaking in Montreal

(07/2-5/05)
Joe, Steve, Mark, Holly, Jack, Jamie, Brendan, and I all headed up to Montreal for a long 4th of July surfing weekend. The agenda was to surf Big Joe and 67 as much as possible in a few days time. Big Joe was at a great level and showed us all what catching huge air is all about. Joe Stumpfel stole the show as usual, throwing hug airs both ways. I guess they don't call it Big Joe for nothing:) Steve Graybill was killing it as well in his Medium Flirt with Donkey Flips and Helixes. Mark Cechini was finally able to get his Small Flirt out onto a big wave and see what it could do. After flying high through the air on each ride he came back to the eddy with nothing but smiles all day long. Pyramid wave was in and I spent quite a bit of time, like 20+ min. a ride, surfing, spinning, and launching huge right blunts. I've really learned to enjoy steep, fast, glassy, green waves:) The Habitat 67 wave was at a level that locals tell us only happens for about 2 weeks a year, a level that none of us had ever seen before. The main wave is a glassy green wave in the 6-8 ft. range and about 20-30 ft. wide with a big foamy surfers right shoulder. This wave was fun in playboats, but truly came alive in composite surf kayaks! Surfing was definitely on every ones minds as we sat in the eddy with 30+ board surfers at times. Joe, Mark, and I swapped a Flyer and Charger around to get some incredible surfs on this river wave. I shot quite a bit of helmet cam footage from the Charger as Mark and Joe tore up the face of the wave. Who knew that carving, spinning, and green grinding could be so much fun? Well, I guess those are a lot of the reasons I originally started paddling:) The trip was tons of fun with exceptionally good weather throughout the weekend. Joe and I even managed to walk out of the Montreal casino with a whole lot more money than we walked in with. I'd like to thank Spencer Cooke for designing and letting me demo the Mega Charger, an incredible surf kayak. I look forward to surfing in Montreal sometime again soon. See you on the river- Bryon Dorr |
