Zambezi Rapid 12 B
(12 B Video)

12 B was our daily dose of air time on the 2004 Fluid International Team Trip. This rapid had a river wide feature that started as a pour-over hole on river left and progressively built to a large surging wave on river right. You could catch the wave on the fly or catch it from the eddy on river left. From the eddy you had to surf the hole over to the wave, which was a challenge due to the surging wave that wanted to stop you in the middle of the river, just shy of the sweet spot on the wave. In order to make it to the sweet spot you had to wait out the surges, or put fins on your boat:)

Graeme Anderson was the all star of this spot. Graeme was able to consistently launch his Small Flirt way up in the air, performing some of today's hardest freestyle maneuvers. Joe Stumpfel, Seth Chapelle, and Leif Anderson were all addicted to 12 B. I don't think that I saw these guys out of there boats at all at this spot, while the rest of the crew, including myself, needed many breaks to catch our breaths from such an exhausting surf. I think the only time I saw Seth sitting on the shore at 12 B was when he managed to break his paddle while surfing the wave. Joe and Leif even managed to find a way to have fun in the hole at 12 B throwing big ends and loops.
