Skookumchuck in May!
|
Skookumchuck means strong water. And that it is. Very fun and fast and always changing. We spent 5 days at skook with tides ranging from 10 to 14.6 knots. The wave grows from tiny green to a monster of foam. There are some super fun levels inbetween that get steep and glassy with a great foam pile at the top. Thats when the Flirt took air and we couldn’t get enough. A few paddle sessions there were just two of us, usually under four paddlers in the eddy. At higher tides the rapid and the whirlpools in the aftermath of the wave, keep a paddler awake. Riding the eddy back to the wave is entertaining with pink and purple starfish clinging to the rocks. The town of Egmont is quiet in May, and the weather was perfect. The walk or bike into the wave is beatiful, with ferns and red cedars. Super cool to be on the coast for awhile.
